Easy Splint Instructions for Use

The Frank™ Easy Splint is a pre-fabricated copolymer splint, available in three sizes, shaped to conform to the posterior of the horse’s lower front leg. It provides the veterinarian with an easy-to-use, inexpensive, reusable and customizable splint.  The splint is set in a neutral position, slightly oversized to accommodate a thick warp, and gently flared at the edges to minimize pressure.

Sizing

Small: 7 inches from mid-fetlock to floor (large ponies and small horses)

Medium: 8 inches from mid-fetlock to floor

Large: 9 inches from mid-fetlock to floor (thoroughbreds and horses of similar size)

Customizing

The splint can be trimmed or heated to modify for a closer fit.

To trim: use a cast saw or hack saw, and smooth with a file and sandpaper.

To heat: use a heat gun or propane torch, heating the plastic until clear or glossy.  Reshape as needed, hold the position until cool, or dip into cold water.

Care and Cleaning

  1. Your brace is made from copolymer plastic. It must be used with a wrap.
  2. To clean, use mild soap and a soft cloth.
  3. Allow to air dry completely before storing.
  4. Store above freezing and below 85 degree F.  Pronged very hot temperature can cause plastic to change shape.  Temperature below freezing will not damage the plastic, but will necessitate warming before use because the plastic becomes brittle when cold.

Warning: These braces are to be used under the supervision of a veterinarian.  Consult your veterinarian for wearing schedule, precautions, and limitations.  The brace is only one element in overall veterinary care.  There is no guarantee that injury will be prevented through the use of the product, or that the product will provide the desired results.
